The Picture Underneath… I guess you Shot n’ Rollers out there is damn curious about what the heck is this all about. Literally, this chapter simply means The Picture Underneath your Subjects, or should I say, “the picture behind the picture”.

Consisting of 3 different sections, Chapter 5: The Picture Underneath is all about Art, Abstract and Still Life Photography. The top 3 genre where Shot n’ Roll is most interested.

Creative thinking and Artistic vision. The 2 major keys to unlock the gates of Art. If you have these keys, then you’re insane! Send those keys here coz I definitely need one! Hehehe!

Since this chapter is divided into 3 separate categories, I now bring you to the 1st one. Let’s cut the chit-chat crap and get serious! \m/

What is Art? – Wiki says…
Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way to affect the senses or emotions.
It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music, literature, film, photography, sculpture, and paintings.

Definition problems:
Art Photography? Wiki says
There are no universally-accepted definitions of the related terms “art photography,” “artistic photography,” and “fine art photography,” as exemplified by definitions found in reference books, in scholarly articles, and on the Web.

Since there’s no universally-accepted definitions, I’ll just use the two definitions that can be found in reference books.
“Art photography“: “photography that is done as a fine art — that is, done to express the artist’s perceptions and emotions and to share them with others.
“Fine art photography“: “the production of images to fulfill the creative vision of a photographer. … Synonymous with art photography.

Abstract Section

According to the web, there is no standard, universally accepted definition of Abstract Photography. However, to put the limits regarding this topic, here’s the 2 statements that we may use to define this section.

* Abstract photos does not represent the subject in a literal way.
* Communicates primarily through form, color, and curves rather than image detail.

In addition, Abstract Photography communicates to the viewer primarily through the viewer’s emotion and interpretation towards the subject. It is important to notice that the definition did not say that the subject matter had to be unrecognizable. It is true that, in some abstract images, the viewer can not tell what has been photographed. However, that is just one type of abstract image.

Still Life Section

Still Life Photography is the depiction of inanimate subject matter, most typically a small grouping of objects. It gives the photographer more leeway in the arrangement of design elements within a composition.

Still life photography is a demanding art, one in which the photographers are expected to be able to form their work with a refined sense of lighting, coupled with compositional skills. “Not all colorless is lifeless.”

Brief description:
Monochrome describes your subject in one color or shades of one color. Monochrome images in neutral colors are called gray-scale or black-and-white.

Black and White color combos are something that we rarely see around. Some people didn’t appreciate the art and beauty of it coz of it’s dull and pale illustration, but as for Shot n’ Roll, the simplicity brought by monochrome is beautifully undeniable.

- When it comes to reflection, Mirror is the first one. This is the most commonly used in taking self-portraits. See Self-Portrait shots nos. 1 to 4.

Way of the Cross… A Passion and Photography, in observance of the holy week.
After visiting the two beautiful and interesting churches, we head our way to the 3rd church on the list.

St. Rita Church in Santa Rita – has a relic of St. Rita.  This relic has a piece of the saint’s body either a bone, a hair or lock of hair or a piece of flesh. Saint Rita’s relic in this church is from her flesh. Her intact and incorruptible body is kept in Cascia Italy.

After shooting from our 3rd destination, we proceed to the next and final church on the list.

San Agustin Church, Lubao

San Agustin Church is one of the oldest churches in Pampanga. This is where the marriage of President Arroyo’s eldest son was held eight years ago. Other famous “Lubenians” include educator Alejandro Quiboloy, movie stars, Rogelio and Jaime dela Rosa, the movie director, Gregorio Fernandez, actor Rudy Fernandez.

After visiting the four historic churches in Pampanga, we had our way to Cutud to witness the reenactment of Christ’s Passion and Crucifiction.

Heading our way to where the cross stands is not an easy one. Under the extreme heat of the sun and long kilometer walk, these were just some of the factors that will put your body and patience to the test. (Not to mention the blood splattering from people whose taking Penitensya that walks with you)

Studio is said to be an artist’s workroom… Yes it is!

I’ve been through a lot of studio equipped with head-bangin’ gadgets. Microphones, wires, guitar effects and amplifiers everywhere. I used to bring my bass guitar whenever we go to this place, but this one right here is different, I bring my cam instead.

No amps, electric guitars and drum set. A studio built for your eyes only. Roll down the background canvass, hit the lights, strike a pose and give me your sweetest smile. Ladies and Gents, welcome to Shot n’ Roll goes Studio!

Taking portraits on studio is a cool shooting experience. This is one place that you’ll definitely keep on shooting. A good spot for model and photographer to shoot, coz any pose or any position will give you a nice shot. This is the place where there is no bad shot, unless your cam settings is incorrect. Suggestion? Use a Light Meter to give you a proper exposure.

Here’s what the Light Meter says on our set (with Studio Flash):
ISO 100
f/8.0
1/125 sec
I’ve just increase the ISO to 200.

Here’s the settings that I’ve used without flash.
ISO 400
f/5.6
1/15 sec
